Relay For Life The Relay For Life was held at Damascus High School on May 22nd. A total of 51 people went. Unfortunately the relay was cut short due to major thunderstorms. Not all laps were tallied so we're not sure how many laps were walked. When scouts weren't walking, they were helping with the illuminations. You could get free snow cones, soda, and snacks (brownies, cookies, etc.). Pizza was sold for $1 a slice. For dinner, we gobbled down 8(16oz) buckets of KFC chicken and 5 extra large bags of chips. The committee in charge closed down the event at 10 p.m. We bailed out to McDonalds. There we ate 5 super sized fries and then went home. The next morning we had to go back and take down all the wet tents and bring the gear back to Olney. If you left behind some equipment and still don't have it, contact the Greenspon's (301-774-5394). Troop 264 raises money for cancer during Relay for Life by Terri Hogan Staff Writer Rain may have caused the American Cancer Societ~s Relay for Life to end earlier than planned, but it did hot dampen the spirit of Olney Boy Scout Troop 264. Thirty-seven scouts and 14 adults participated in the event, held Saturday at Damascus High School. Relay for Life is an annual team event to honor anyone who has fought cancer. It teaches the community about cancer prevention, clrrates awareness of the education programs provided by the American dancer Society, and raises funds to fight cancer. The scouts, who were divided into three teams, accepted the challenge of raising a minimum of $l000 per team, and they succeeded. They raised over $3,000 by asking for donations from such Olney businesses as Giant, Blockbuster, and CVS, as well as family, friends and neighbors. During the day, scouts took turns walking and running around the high school track while enjoying music, food, games, prizes and camaraderie. While not participating, theyspent much of the day volunteering. The event was originally scheduled to last 24 hours, but the participants were sent home at approximately 10 p.m. when thunderstorms moved through the area. This is the second year that Troop 264 has participated in Relay for Life, and the Scouts are looking forward to participating again next year -The Gazette May 26, 1999
